William Woodson Tyree
AKA "Woodson" or "Chief"
(1900 - 1988)

Biographical notes by Elinor F. Tyree
William Woodson Tyree was born on 5/29/1900 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, in a parsonage of the Southern Methodist Church, and died 4/4/1988. He married Ruth Chase (born 2/23/1905, died 12/23/1976) on 12/26/1925 in Tulsa, Oklahoma (with his father, William Fenton Tyree, officiating). Woodson graduated from Oklahoma University, took a master's degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, and made a career of teaching. First he taught Speech and Drama at the High School in Ponca City, Oklahoma; later he was Professor of Speech and Drama at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His wife Ruth was also a teacher (5th grade) and a horsewoman/breeder of some note. When Ruth died of cancer, she asked to be cremated and cast over the riding trails she loved; when Woodson died, his ashes joined Ruth's in Colorado's hills.
Woodson's Christmas Cards ...
These homemade Christmas cards are like tiny time capsules -- touching on World War II, the atomic bomb, the cold war, the Vietnam War, hippies, and the first man on the moon. A thread of faith in God seems to run throughout, and Woodson seems to use the poetic device of counting the days or months of his life several times. Enjoy!
